Growing up, my little brother was always putting things together. Sticks were lashed together and held on by crudely placed nails to make a birch branch chair when he was around the age of 8. Later on in his life, he took on the hobby of tapping the sugar maples behind our family home. He created this makeshift stove out of an old and rusty metal drum and a metal pipe, to boil his sap into maple syrup. I would often make my way around the side of the house to see him hunching over the small door of the stove drum, stoking the fire. The two back legs of his rickety handmade birch chair tilted up, as he teetered on the front legs in concentration. Suspended there for hours until he was happy with his progress for the day.
